Pregnancy Can Cause Swollen Feet

The feet are often affected during pregnancy. Many pregnant women can have difficulty fitting into their shoes, and may have to consider purchasing larger sizes. The added weight during this time may cause the feet to flatten and roll inward, which is referred to as overpronation. Swollen feet and ankles are common side effects of pregnancy. This can happen from the extra blood and fluids the fetus requires for growth, and it can pool in the lower extremities. There are various methods that can be implemented which may help to reduce swollen feet. These can consist of elevating the feet as often as possible and limiting sodium intake. It is beneficial to engage in a gentle exercise program, in addition to drinking plenty of water daily. If you are pregnant and are concerned about the changes in your feet, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with Dr. Royall from Mountain View Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

If you are suffering from tenderness, pain, or stiffness in the joints of your feet or ankles, call us to schedule an appointment.

A stress fracture in the ankle is a hairline crack in the bone, and although it is most often experienced by athletes, other people can have them. Such an injury is generally the result of continued high stress to the bone and develops over a period of time. An ankle stress fracture is considered to be a repetitive stress injury, usually caused by running and jumping. These actions can weaken the muscles, leaving them unable to withstand the shock or force. This leaves the bones to absorb the pounding, and after a while, cracks will develop. Stress fractures are also common among people with osteoporosis, flat feet, or rigid arches. Symptoms include extreme pain, tenderness, bruising, and swelling. A podiatrist can confirm the presence of a stress fracture in the ankle by conducting imaging tests, such as an MRI, an X-ray, or a bone scan. If you believe you have developed an ankle stress fracture, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for treatment options.

Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact Dr. Royall from Mountain View Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep your pain free and on your feet.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • Runners
  • People affected with Osteoporosis
  • Tennis or basketball players
  • Gymnasts
  • High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.

Bunions May Affect Runners

People who enjoy running or jogging may be concerned if a bunion develops.  A bunion is a bony protrusion that forms on the side of the big toe and is uncomfortable while wearing shoes. As the bunion grows, it may alter the foot structure, and cause the other toes to shift toward each other. A bunion is considered to be a deformity and may cause pain and discomfort. Runners may have to alter their gait to accommodate the bunion, and medical attention is often sought so their running or jogging routine may resume to normal. A common cause of bunions can come from wearing shoes that do not have ample room in the toe area. High heels fit into this category, which may cause the toes to squeeze together. It may also happen from genetic reasons, which may give people fair warning to wisely choose shoes that fit correctly. Some patients have found temporary relief for mild bunions by wearing a protective covering over it. If you have developed a bunion, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the correct treatment methods, which may include surgery for permanent removal.

If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact Dr. Royall of Mountain View Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.

Causes

  • Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
  • Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development

Symptoms

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Callus or corns on the bump
  • Restricted motion in the big toe

In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

A number of exercises are known to reduce the discomfort of arthritis in the big toe by increasing both ranges of motion and strength. Toe exercises can also help to reduce stiffness. Experts suggest taking it slowly at first, and increasing the number, intensity, and length of exercise periods as the range of motion also increases. It is suggested to do motion exercises for two sets of 10 repetitions. Stretching exercises should be held for 20 to 30 seconds and performed four to five times weekly. Strength exercises call for eight to 10 repetitions, up to five times a week. For older adults, repetitions can increase to 15 with reduced resistance. Toe curls and big toe extensions are common stretching exercises. Towel curls, toe splay, and marble pickup are for strengthening. Resisted toe flexion is helpful for increasing mobility. For directions on how to best use these and other toe exercises, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Falling is the leading cause of injury the majority of emergency departments handle. Common injuries from falling can include hip fractures, bruising, or head injuries, which can be serious concerns among the elderly population. People who are older can notice their eyesight may have become poorer, and it is beneficial to have routine eye examinations which can replace existing eyeglasses. Having regular physical examinations is an effective method in updating prescribed medicine, which may be helpful in preventing falls. There are effective fall prevention methods that can be implemented in the home. These can include repairing broken steps that lead into the house, and it can be helpful to check existing lighting surrounding the front door. Additionally, in the kitchen area, scatter rugs can be replaced with rubber backed rugs that can better stay in place. Many people install grab bars in the toilet and shower area, and keep a non-slip rubber mat in the bathtub or shower. If you would like more information about effective fall prevention methods, it is suggested that you discuss this with a podiatrist who can provide you with helpful tips.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Dr. Royall from Mountain View Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.
