Podiatrists in the Military

Podiatrists are foot specialists that work in a variety of practice areas. Many podiatrists, after undergoing a rigorous training regimen, will open up their own practice. Others may work on a team or for another organization like the military. Podiatrists in the military play a very important role. Individuals in the military need healthy, vibrant feet to function well and properly perform their duties. When a serviceman or woman is having an issue with the health of their feet, a military podiatrist will help them identify and treat the problem. Military podiatrists can work in hospitals that are located both on land and also on ships, depending on the specific position. If you are interested in learning more about podiatrists, reach out to your local podiatrist today.

What Is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.

Causes of Numbness in the Feet

Sometimes when you sit for a while with legs crossed, a feeling of numbness and tingling in the feet sets in, but dissipates rapidly after standing up or changing positions. The term for this sensation is transient (temporary) paresthesia. Frequent or long term numbness, however, can indicate more serious problems and could be caused by an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes or peripheral artery disease. Other possible causes of numbness in the feet include an injury that puts pressure on the nerves, lower back problems, or sciatica (irritation of the sciatic nerve). Tarsal tunnel syndrome, when a nerve that runs from the back of leg to the ankle and foot is compressed or damaged, also can result in numbness. Tumors or growths that put pressure on the spinal cord, legs or feet may be another cause. Numbness is often joined by tingling, pain, and a burning or itching sensation. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms regularly, it is a good idea to consult a podiatrist who can determine the cause and suggest an appropriate treatment plan.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Royall from Mountain View Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Elderly Foot Care

Elderly foot care can help prevent injuries, falls, and complications from chronic diseases like diabetes. Since muscle tissue on the feet can thin and nerves work less effectively with age, one might not feel if they have cuts, blisters, or sores on their feet. Daily examination of the feet with a mirror is therefore important. Wear well-fitting shoes that provide stability. When going outdoors, wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet and prevent cuts and scrapes. Keep toenails trimmed by cutting them straight across and not too short to avoid ingrown toenails. To promote good circulation, stop smoking if you smoke, stretch your feet each day, prop them up on a stool or couch when sitting, and wiggle your toes when sitting for long periods. Wash your feet daily, dry them well, and apply a moisturizer. Change socks regularly to prevent fungal infections. If you are a senior and have a problem with your feet or just want to ensure your feet remain in good shape, visit a podiatrist regularly for foot checks.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Dr. Royall from Mountain View Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Medical Attention for a Broken Foot

When an individual breaks their foot, there are two ways in which they can endure a fracture. First, one can suffer a direct injury from a high impact activity or from some kind of blunt force trauma (i.e. falls, collisions, etc.). Second, an individual can endure a stress fracture from repeated overuse in physical activities. Regardless of the cause of the broken foot, medical attention ought to be immediately sought out. Sometimes it may be difficult for an individual to recognize that their foot has been broken. However, if you notice foot pain after a fall or some kind of impact injury, it is recommended that you contact a podiatrist as soon as possible. Upon receiving medical attention, your doctor may take an X-ray of the foot, especially if there is tenderness in key areas or if the patient can not bear weight on the affected foot. To detect a stress fracture, a doctor may choose to perform an MRI, as this procedure helps identify bone edema, which develops before a stress fracture. Contact a podiatrist today if you believe you have broken your foot.

A broken foot requires immediate medical attention and treatment. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Royall from Mountain View Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
